Climbing is a subskill of Athletics that focuses on vertical movement, allowing a character to scale walls, cliffs, structures, and other surfaces that would normally be impassable. This includes maintaining grip on unstable terrain, climbing under pressure, and navigating surfaces with limited handholds. Those skilled in Climbing can access hidden paths, avoid ground-based threats, and control positioning in environments where height matters.

Each rank in Climbing grants a +1 bonus to Athletics checks when scaling surfaces, maintaining grip, or resisting forced movement while climbing. This bonus applies when ascending, descending, or holding position on any climbable surface.

Advancing in the Climbing Subskill also givese these additional benefits:

  • At 10 Ranks in Climbing, you understand how to lock your body to a wall without your hands. You gain the Wall Fighter ability. This ability allows you full control of your hands while climbing a vertical surface, allowing you to hold onto a wall with your legs and use your hands for other tactics, such as grappling or swinging a sword. You must still use at least one hand to move from that position.
  • At 20 Ranks in Climbing, you are a natural at Climbing. You gain the Sure Climber ability. If you make a D100 roll to climb, and the die roll less than a 30, you may choose to make the roll a 30. Additionally, if you are involved in a grapple check while climbing, you may add your ranks in Climbing to your Grapple roll.
  • At 30 Ranks in Climbing, you can make a Natural Climber. You can climb vertical surfaces with a climb speed equal to your walking speed, and can climb on ceilings at a speed equal to half your walking speed.
