The path of the enchanter is to make the wondrous out of the mundane. Enchanting empowers all of your other creations and treasures, making a good weapon into a great one; or turning a simple piece of jewelry into a powerful artifact. While most will never be able to enchant themselves, they can benefit anything they touch with the techniques of Enchanting.
Enchanting, like all crafting skills, is derived from three component types:
The Base ingredient is the standard compound that all potions must be made of. As Enchanting is likely the broadest and most complicated of the crafting skills, there are numerous types of bases, with differing qualities. An enchanting base will always be non-consumable, but can be as simple as a rune-covered rock; or a small metal tube; or a full suit of plate armor. As with anything, base armors come in five qualities: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, and Legendary.
There is always an Active Ingredient in any Enchantment recipe. This ingredient is often what defines the enchantment, and is something tied to the specific enchantment. However, some enchantment recipes simply call for an active ingredient of a quality; as an example, some recipes will use any Uncommon active ingredient.
Unlike other crafting skills, Enchanting will always call for at least two Extra Ingredients, and possibly more. Extra Ingredients are additives that are often optional. The first is a soul captured in a gemstone, known as a Soulstone. This is a magical essence taken from a dying creature, captured by those with the Capture Soulstone Subskill. The second is Powdered Crystal, or units of its many substitutes. All Enchantments will always require at least one unit of Powdered Crystal. There will generally be a limit on the number of Extra Ingredients you can put in past these. Every recipe is different, and some may not let you put in any Extra Ingredients, while others may require several.
Each item you Enchant has a Recipe. A Recipe will consist of the required ingredients, the gold piece cost to make the item, the Downtime required to make the item, and the rank of Enchanting required for to make the item. Last, some recipes have special requirements, such as a requirement for proficiency in a skill or a focus or special equipment. Here is a very basic recipe:
Recipe: Vicious Weapon |
| Required Skill: Enchanting Rank 1 Crafting Cost: 100 GP Downtime Required: 10 days of downtime, minus one per rank in Enchanting. Ingredients Required: ✺ Base Ingredient: Any Common Weapon or greater; it must follow the Enchanting Weapons restrictions ✺ Active Ingredient: 1 Unit of Scales from a “Rage” creature ✺ Extra Ingredients: Required: 1 Unit of Powdered Crystal, 1 Common Soulstone; You may add 1 Optional Extra Ingredient as well. Special Requirements: None Result: You add the “Vicious Weapon” Enchantment to the weapon. |
When Enchanting an Item, it will always have a fixed amount of time for crafting it, often modified by your ranks in the Enchanting Subskill. Having access to an Enchantment Workshop may further reduce the time required to enchant an item.
It should be noted that Enchanting Armor and Weapons has its own rules, as unlike other items, multiple enchantments can be stacked on both Chest Armor and Weapons. Other item types – rings, boots, belts, and anything else- can only hold one type of Enchantment, and cannot hold an Enhancement.
Advancing Your Enchanting Skill
Like all Subskills, you must spend your days of Downtime to learn a crafting skill. Crafting skills follow the same formula of days used to advance ranks, but there are some differences in how you can advance in a crafting skill.
All crafting skills must be initially taught to you by a qualified source, meaning that you will have to receive access to learning Enchanting in an adventure or special event. Once you have one rank in Enchanting, you may begin to use Rank 1 Enchanting recipes to enchant items after any adventure. Simply mark the items made in the summary folder for the adventure on Discord.
Advancing your skill in Enchanting is slightly different than most Subskills. You still need to spend the required Downtime to advance your skill in Enchanting, but cannot do so unless you are practicing with a master (or, in reality, have a reward from an adventure that allows you to progress to a certain rank in Enchanting); or you can practice Enchanting. Once you have spent your 10 days of Downtime to learn Rank 1 Enchanting, you may continue to craft by spending Downtime and resources. Days of Downtime spent Enchanting items count towards your Downtime Required to learn Enchanting; if you spend 20 more days Enchanting items, you will automatically advance to Rank 2, and so on.
As you increase in ranks, you will be given automatic recipes. All other recipes must be acquired.
| Rank | Downtime Required (Total Spent) | Automatic Recipes |
| 1 | 10 | Ammunition +1 Enhancement; Goggles of Night; Feather Token (Fan) |
| 2 | 30 | Weapon +1 Enhancement; Cap of Water Breathing; Brooch of Shielding |
| 3 | 60 | Armor +1 Enhancement; Ammunition +2 Enhancement; Feather Token (Whip) |
| 4 | 100 | Weapon +2 Enhancement; Periapt of Health; Wand of Magic Missiles |
| 5 | 150 | Armor +2 Enhancement; Ammunition +3 Enhancement; Feather Token (Boat) |
| 6 | 210 | Weapon +3 Enhancement; Bead of Force; Pearl of Power |
Other Factors of Enchantment
There are other factors that can affect your Enchantment skills and limitations.
Many recipes require proficiency in the Tinker’s Tools, or an Enchantment Workshop of a certain rank, or your ability to cast a spell or a rank in a Subskill. These recipes often produce more powerful or rare versions of an Enchanted items.
If your character’s soul is bound to a Place of Power that has an Enchantment Workshop, you will often gain a bonus to Enchanting items associated with the Place’s magical energy types, and generally a reduction in crafting time. Additionally, Crafting Recipes can be “taught” to Enchantment Workshops in a Place of Power, allowing any Chaos Seed that is bound to the Place of Power to produce the recipe, even if they do not know it on their own. This does not teach the Chaos Seed the Enchantment Recipe, but does allow them to make an item as if they did when using that Enchantment Workshop.
Chaos Seeds with the Scribing crafting skill can work with an Enchanter to create Recipe Books for known Enchantment Recipes, which can then be taught to other Enchanters. Enchantment recipes can only be taught via Recipe Books. Further information on this is explained in The Basics of Scribing.
