In addition to magic items created with spells, some substances have innate special properties. If you make a suit of armor or weapon out a special material, it will often have a minor benefit that is independent of further Item Enchantments or Item Enhancements.
Bismuth Alloy is one such material. It can only be used in primarily metal armors and weapons. It requires Smithing Rank 3 to utilize as an alternate material in a crafting recipe. If successfully used, weapons and armor gain the following benefits:
Weapons: Any metal weapon made with Bismuth Alloy does additional Poison damage whenever the weapon would normally hit a target and do damage. The extra damage done is one plus the weapon’s Enhancement bonus; for example, a Bismuth Alloy Longsword +1 would do two additional points of Poison damage when it normally damages a target. Additionally, if you are attempting to add any Earth or Poison based Enchantments to the weapon via crafting, it only requires half of the Downtime to complete the Enchantment, as this weapon is naturally receptive to both.
Armors: Any metal armor made with Bismuth Alloy reduces Poison damage taken by one plus the armor’s Enhancement bonus. For example, a Bismuth Alloy Breastplate +2 would reduce Fire damage taken by 3 points. This is applied before other reductions, such as Resistance, are applied. Additionally, if you are attempting to add any Earth or Poison based Enchantments to the armor via crafting, it only requires half of the Downtime to complete the Enchantment, as this armor is naturally receptive to both.
All other physical factors, such as weight and proficiency, are the same as the base item. The cost of these items is 100 gold above the base cost of a weapon, and 150% of the base cost of the armor. This is an Uncommon Smithing Base.
