Gather Information is a Common skill, and is modified by your Charisma.
Gather Information is an essential tool for uncovering secrets, rumors, and hidden knowledge in community settings. By leveraging this skill, characters can subtly insert themselves into the social fabric of a town, guild hall, or bustling market, asking open-ended or non-specific questions to glean useful information about a subject of interest. Unlike direct interrogation, Gathering Information focuses on casting a wide net, piecing together hints, gossip, and observations to form a broader picture. Whether you’re trying to learn the habits of a local noble, uncover clues about a mysterious artifact, or assess the state of a region’s politics, this skill allows characters to explore the unseen currents of their environment.
Gathering Information is particularly powerful in dynamic, living settings, where NPCs have diverse perspectives and motivations. Using this skill, characters might overhear a merchant complaining about increased bandit attacks, a bard singing of lost treasures, or a tavern patron sharing a tale of strange lights in the forest. In The Land, where knowledge can be as valuable as gold, mastering the art of Gathering Information is a surefire way to stay one step ahead.
As your skill in Gather Information grows, you will gain additional benefits from it.
Increased Affinity: When you first attain a new title in Gather Information (Initiate or Apprentice), you gain a 25% Affinity increase in either the Gather Information, Lip Reading, or Unspoken Word skills. You can gain this affinity even if you did not have a previous Affinity Bonus or Ranks in the chosen skill.
Initiate (Ranks 10-19):
View from Afar: Once per game, when an ally you can see is trying to collect information using any skill, you can roll a Gather Information check and substitute it for their check.
Apprentice (Ranks 20-34):
Always Watching: Whenever you roll a Gather Information checks (or one of its subskills), and the die roll is below 50, you may choose to make it a 50, before your bonuses to the roll.
All of these bonuses are cumulative.
