Perhaps you were sitting at an inn, waiting for your next adventure. Perhaps you were riding the Solamnic Plains hunting for Dragons or exploring Waterdeep; or hunting in the Hool Marsh. Perhaps you were sailing the Astral Sea. Honestly, it does not matter where you came from, for you are here now.

With a flash of light, the world shook violently around you. You felt all you know melt away, and all but your soul became a blur of colors, as you travelled through the unimaginable realm of Chaos. There seemed to be no sense of time or substance; only a primal instinct to maintain the integrity of your soul. Then, you heard a voice. You could not understand what the voice sounded like, only what was said. “Welcome, lost soul, to your new Reality.

It then continued, “Due to circumstances out of your control, you have been forcibly summoned to a new realm known only as The Land. Perhaps you have heard of it, but do not concern yourself with your previous existence. It is your time to make your mark upon the The Land, and you will be placed in an ancient realm known as the Red Venom Plains.”

“And never forget – Either you will shape your new reality, or you will be absorbed by it.” As the words fade, you are violently shunted out of the Chaos into a new world, one somehow familiar but still very different from your past. You are a shadow of what you once were – your gear is very basic, and you have lost much of what you once knew. But you are here now, and it would seem you lack the time to regret your losses, as a new and dangerous world awaits you.

Step 1: Create a D&D Beyond Account. You’ll want to go to dndbeyond.com and make a free account.

Step 2: Join our Red Venom Plains campaign and make a character. You’ll want to click one of these links. The first link you click may be full (as only 12 characters are allowed per group), so try the next one down the line if you need space. Once you’ve clicked a link with space, you’ll see a “Create a Character” button in the center. Click it, and you’ve joined our campaign!

Step 3: Choose your Name, and set Preferences. You’ll have to choose your name here, which is extremely important in our campaign. It is possible to modify your character many times as you progress, but you can never change your name.

For your preferences, you should choose the following settings:
Sources: All on (red) except Homebrew and Rick and Morty Content
Dice Rolling: Should be off, as it slows down your gaming. Its just the graphical effect, you’ll still roll dice when you click a button.
Optional Features: On or Off, it’s your preference. Both options are legal, but don’t mess with them if you don’t know what they are – you can always change them alter.
Advancement Type: XP
Hit Point Type: Fixed
User Prerequisites: Feats and Multiclass Requirements should be on.
Show Level-Scaled Spells: That is your preference, it can be very SPAM-y at higher levels.
Encumbrance Type: No Encumbrance.
Ignore Coin Weight: On.
Ability Modifier or Character Privacy: That’s your preference.

Step 4: Choose a Race. On the next tab, you will see a large list of races. You may choose any race you desire, or Custom Lineage. The whole concept of the game is that some greater power stole people from all around the many worlds of Dungeons and Dragons and brought them to this new place, so you may have any race.

Step 5: Choose a Class. You’ll start as a first level character, and all class options are legal. A huge change between the Red Venom Plains campaign and most D&D is the lack of deities in the world – The Land itself is a source of magic, and divine casters are viewed as mystics rather than clerics.

Step 6: Choose your Ability Scores. You’ll be using either Standard Array or Point Buy method to calculate your ability scores.

Step 7: Customize Your Description. This section is entirely on you to fill out, but understand how your background will affect you. The trip through the Sea of Chaos has stripped you of your specific memories, but left you with the life lessons of your past. You may not remember where you were once a soldier, but you do remember how to march, how to swing a sword, and how to salute your superior when respect is warranted. You may not remember why you know how to speak Goblin, but you have a vague memory of a friendly Goblin from your childhood.

Step 8: Choose your Starting Equipment. Those arriving in The Land start with the most basic equipment. Well, some arrive completely naked, but divine benefactors have decided to gift you with equipment to help you survive. It is very probable that you will not be starting in a town, so choose “Equipment”, and select what you want from the available options. You may also have one trinket of your choosing with sentimental value from your previous life, but you will not be able to remember why you have it.

Step 9: Look at your Character Sheet in all its awesomeness. And welcome to the Red Venom Plains.

Follow-up Steps, before your first game:

Create a StartPlaying.Games Account. You’ll need one to access all of our gaming, as it is what we use to schedule our games. Once you have made an account, you can search for “The Land RPG” and you should see some games listed.

Create a Free Roll20 Account. You are going to want to create a Roll20.net account if you don’t already have one. Choose the free option, we have our account already paid for. Certain special events may try other virtual tabletops, but Roll20 seems to be the most common VTT for our gaming.

Installing Beyond20 Chrome Extension If you haven’t done so already, you are going to want to google “Beyond20 Chrome Extension”, and install it (into Chrome). It is an amazing extension that allows you to roll dice from your D&D Beyond sheet into Roll20. You will not have to import your character into Roll20 once you have done this.
